Fáilte & Welcome
Céad Míle Fáilte to all our readers, whether parent, student, teacher, past student or someone interested to find out about our fine College.
Aimee McGrath attended a TY programme in Benalmadena, Spain, for three weeks in June 2015. Here, she outlines, what she did.
During my three weeks I attended a 4 hour class every morning but afterwards I got to taste the local cuisine. This more than made up for being in the classroom! I lived with a host family only ten minutes from the school and the shops, and I felt that this was a fantastic way of integrating with the local community. Various activities and trips were organised each day by the college which included a day trip to Malaga city, a trip to a water park and an amusement park, sports activities, to name but a few.
The company I went with, and now work for is called Stein Study. It is an Irish company based in Dublin and is an agent for accredited and reputable Language Schools throughout Europe. It provides language courses in different countries for all levels of students, ranging from TY programmes to Leaving Cert programmes. The courses run from 2-4 weeks depending on the course and how long you want to stay for. The countries include France, Germany, Spain and Italy. The programmes are a fun way of being fully immersed in the language, gaining independence, making new friends and exploring a new European city. (Basically the European version of the Gaeltacht).
For me the highlight was having free time, making new friends and experiencing a new country! This gave me a real sense of the culture and lifestyle of the country which was extremely enjoyable.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their language and to experience the culture of the country. (Aimee McGrath - Fifth Year)
Aimee McGrath has arranged a talk from the "Stein Study" team about the benefits of studying a foreign language and the trips abroad that his company provides. Immersion is the best way to learn a foreign language. This will take place on Monday morning, 7th March, for Fifth Year students.
It is a very bust time for the Kildare branch with the national conference taking place between April 7th - 9th in Maynooth University. All details can be found on www.istaconference.com (Bígí linn)
We are also running a JC Science quiz on March 29th in Scoil Chonglas, Baltinglas. Click the links below for the application form or last year's quiz as a sample for your students.
Sr. Susie has sent us a letter to convey her heartfelt thanks to everyone for the warm wishes and the generosity shown by the school community in the fundraising (Mr. Movember) which took place before Christmas. the money is being put to excellent use as you will see.
It has been agreed to change how the Leaving Certificate examinations are graded, using fewer broader grade bands. The current 14-point grading scale (A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, etc. where the grade bands typically cover 5%) will be replaced by an 8-point scale (based on a grade band 10% wide). This requires a new Common Points Scale.
