The Business 2000 Quiz 23rd April 2008

The Quiz
Students were grouped in teams of four for 9 rounds. There were 10 questions in each round. At least four questions in each round were based on the business curriculum. Other questions were based on general knowledge, pop culture, history, geography, science and sport. There was picture question in each round. While we thought these questions were tough, every team scored well.

Dominican Junior Gaelic Footballers are Leinster Leaders!

Dominican College Junior Gaelic footballers produced a monumental display against Grennan College to be crowned Leinster champions on a sun drenched day in Ballitore, Co Kildare. In front of a large support from both sides this game turned into a real thriller! Early in the game both side showed signs of nerves and scores were at a premium. Hannah McInerney with 0-2 and Kate Mulvey with a colossal point meant Dominican edged into an early lead. Dominican then got the lucky breaks you need to win a final as Grennan twice came close to goals, hitting the crossbar on both occasions. Shortly afterwards Niamh O Brien got onto a breaking ball and drove it into the net. Two minutes later the energetic McInerney lobbed in a high ball which deceived the keeper and found the Grennan net. Grennan applied more pressure but were kept scoreless thanks to excellent defending from the athletic pairing of Lorna Meleady and Sinead Leonard. Jenny Maguire was full of determination at full back. At the interval Dominican led by 2-3 to 0-2.

If they were slow to start the first half then the second was quite the opposite. Dominican came storming out of the blocks with fantastic points from Dayna McDonald, Kate Mulvey and the magnificent Lucy Collins who stormed forward from centre back to bisect the posts with a brilliant shot. Then followed some more brilliant defending from Dominican. Aisling Freir was reading the game brilliantly and seemed to be getting in the way of every Grennan attack. On the one occasion they broke through Katie O Shea produced a superb save. Grannie Field, who played through the pain barrier after sustaining a pre-game injury, was as brilliant as she was brave, tigerish in her tackling. Grennan managed to get two points back but Dominican responded with another two from the free-scoring McInerney and Mulvey, whose enthusiasm was infectious. In midfield Roisin Murphy was getting on the ball as much as anyone, totally unselfish, she was the origin of many Dominican attacks. The same could be said of the energetic Irene Dempsey who played her part in a smashing goal from the hard working full foward Nuala O Donavon. Jenny Nulty was at the centre of nearly every Dominican attack and unlucky not to score. Just as Dominican had one eye on the trophy Grennan came again and scored two goals near the end, but Dominican held out with Grace Geogheogan also doing very well when she came on.

The final whistle was met with scenes reminiscent to Croke Parke in late September. The pitch was invaded by the hoards of Dominican followers as the celebrations began. Captain fantastic Dayna McDonald received the trophy from Leinster chairman Bill Daly and her emotional speech will live long in the memory. Altogether this will going down as one of the greatest achievements in the history of Dominican Gaelic Football and is a day the girls will cherish into the future.

Staff-Student Rounders Game

The now annual rounders game took place between Staff and Students and despite the lack of preparation, the Staff did themselves proud. Led on by Mr. Ferriter, the final score was a narrow win for the students.
