Our Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) week is part of our literacy initiative. All students were requested to have some reading material in class or take a book out on loan from our well stocked library. Students were encouraged to bring any appropriate material that they enjoyed reading – a book, a magazine, a graphic novel, an annual. Students read quietly for 30 minutes each day before lunchtime for the week.
As well as the vast majority of students enjoying DEAR and wanting it to take place more often, the feedback from surveys shows a majority also continued reading outside of school time. This is hugely encouraging as reading for pleasure not only allows students to broaden their minds but also access their school-work better and excel academically.
