Special Invitation to the Arás

Over the Easter break, my friends and I were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to visit Arás an Uachtaráin. When we arrived we were given a short tour and learned some very interesting pieces of information about paintings of our past presidents and furniture in the house. After that we attended a ceremony where the Ambassadors of Azerbaijan, Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina presented their credentials to President Michael D. Higgins and Minister Seán Sherlock, amongst many others. Then we were taken outside where the defence forces provided a guard of honour for the Ambassadors while an orchestra played the national anthems of each country. Here we met Michael D. Higgins himself when he came over and shook all of our hands, commenting on the weather and asking if we enjoyed the ceremony. We had our picture taken on the steps of Arás an Uachtaráin and afterwards we went back inside for tea and cake with the army. It was a great opportunity and one we will never forget. (R. Harold)
