Recess 2007

We stared in disbelief as the coach pulled up over the hill. There before us was a small bungalow sized hostel which we were to be staying in for the weekend. We couldn’t believe that this was Recess!! Nothing but trees and mountains surrounded us. It was as if we were in a world of our own. Who would have thought that we were about to have the best weekend of our lives here! When we had settled down and accustomed ourselves to our new surroundings we went on a walk through the deep dark forest of Recess! It was so scary, yet so much fun.

We had an early enough night the first night ready for the adventurous days that awaited us. We were woken at the crack of dawn the next day and were filled with excitement. We got ourselves up and ready for orienteering and kayaking. Orienteering was so much fun. Getting lost in the mountains and trying to find our way back led us to being attacked by crazy sheep! Charging at us we screamed and ran as fast as our legs would take us. The look of terror in our faces, Our life flashed before our eyes.

After our frightening encounter with the sheep of Recess we were back on the bus and on our way to kayaking. We must have looked a state, waddling in our wetsuits and helmets struggling to bring our kayaks into the water. Once we were up and running we had the best time ever. Capsizing and splashing all over the lake trying to control ourselves. At the end of our eventful first day we retired to our tents but not before we had tasted the unique taste Recess food – mashed potatoes, pork and gravy!

The following day we were up even earlier to go to Achill. Everyone was so excited because we were going surfing. We spent the afternoon surfing the waves – well, at least trying too! We had a delicious BBQ on the beach as well before heading back to the hostel for our T.Y. Factor night! This was so funny and everyone really enjoyed themselves performing. It really was a great night!

We were all so sad the next morning as we packed to leave. We had had such a good time in that deserted mountainous place. We didn’t want to be going back to boring old Dublin! I have to say that going to Recess was definitely the highlight of Transition Year and the memories I have of there will never be forgotten.
