School Mass

The school mass to celebrate the new school year was held last Thursday the 21st of September. This year we had a change of venue due to renovations in the local church and so it was held in the school gym. This was transformed into the perfect venue for the mass with joint efforts from teachers and students. The choir, orchestra and the chamber choir practiced in advance to make the occasion a memorable one for all of us.

The occasion started with the presentation of the Ann Kearnan award. This year’s recipient is to Emma Gaffney, who achieved 2 H1s in Physics and Biology and is studying a science related course in TCD.

Throughout the mass the choir and orchestra performed hymns beautifully while Isobel Hanlon left the school speechless with her beautiful version of "How does a moment last forever" from Beauty and the Beast. This song was part of Mr. Mc Cartney’s wonderful homily which as always brought a smile to everyone.

The Eucharistic ministers received their blessing and they gave out the communion at the mass for the very first time. The prefects were awarded their badges and blessing from Fr Tom Noone.

All in all the mass was a huge success and it was very nice to have it in the school this year. Thank you to all the teachers and students who helped out and got the gym ready for the mass.

Evie Oppermann (PR Prefect)

Ecology Fieldtrip

6th Year Biology students carried out their Ecology fieldtrip to Portrane’s rocky seashore on Thursday 28/9/17. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and encountered many new flora and fauna as well as first hand observation of predator/prey relationships within the habitat. Our students got to use all sorts of equipment associated with the ecosystem study and really got hands on with the practical. The whole experience is sure to aid our students in their revision of Ecology for the Leaving Certificate Exam. We were extremely lucky with the weather and rushed back in time for the parent-teacher meeting.

Anne Kernan Award 2017

We were delighted to welcome back Emma Gaffney to our school mass. Having achieved two H1’s in Physics and Biology, she is this year’s worthy winner of the prestigious Anne Kernan award. This award is given to the student with the two best science subjects who goes on to study a science subject at third level and Emma has started her studies in Trinity College Dublin studying Human Health and Disease.

We wish Emma all the best in her studies and she has already volunteered to return to talk to our science students in the future. Emma is pictured below with her mother Ms. Mairéad Gaffney and Dr. Olive Laffoy (Principal).

Trip to the Áras 2017

Transition Year students from 4.2 enjoyed the great experience of witnessing the Credentials ceremony at Áras An Uachtaráin on Thursday, April 28th. New Ambassadors from Mozambique, El Salvador and Nepal handed in their Credentials to President Higgins. Each student got to greet President Higgins and enjoyed a small reception with refreshments after a tour of the Aras. Emma Wakeham made it extra special by performing a piece of music on the grand Piano in the reception room.
